U.S. drama prize for the musical Billy

The Broadway production hit musical Billy Elliot has received 10 awards to the 2009 Drama Desk Awards.

Show was named best new musical at the event. Director Stephen Daldry composer Sir Elton John and his cast was recognized by the United States.

Art, on the basis of Daldry's 2000 Oscar-nominated film, was selected by 15 Tony awards earlier this month.

Elsewhere in the UK Janet McTeer was named best actress, while Australian Geoffrey Rush was named best actor.

Their prize was for work, playing Mary Stuart, and Exit the King, respectively.

Lynn Nottage's Pulitzer Prize-winner ruined season, was named outstanding new play.

Revival

The story of the ballet-dancing student is the northern mining town in England, Billy Elliot also receive a prize for his choreography, orchestrations, lighting design and sound design.

Hadyn Gwynne Featured was named outstanding actress for her actions, first seen in the original London production.

Other awards went to veteran star, Angela Lansbury for her work in Noel Coward's blithe Spirit and Brian d'Arcy James to play the title role in Shrek musical.

The best revival award went to Alan Ayckbourn is the Norman Conquest, who also won the best director prize for British Matthew Warchus.

Jane Fonda, Jim Dale, and John Lithgow was among the leaders at Sunday's ceremony in New York, which was deployed in Harvey Fierstein.

About 54. Annual awards were given to theater critics and writers, to Broadway, off-Broadway and off-off-Broadway material.
